The social psychology of risk

An invite in English? There must be a good reason? Yes, there is.

Studieavond

We offer our members a unique opportunity to attend a lecture by Dr Robert Long - a prolific author and well regard keynote speaker - during his stay in Belgium.

Keynote speaker

Dr Robert Long (Rob) is the founder of Human Dymensions. Rob has extensive experience, qualifications and expertise across a range of sectors including government, education, corporate, industry and community sectors over 30 years. Rob is the Global Founder of The Social Psychology of Risk and the The Centre for Leadership and Learning in Risk. He undertakes International and National culture diagnostics for numerous Tier 1 organisations.

Rob is (co) author of 7 books which challenge the usual paradigm and understanding of risk.

  • His first book “Risk Makes Sense” is an international bestseller and is distributed in over 20 countries.
  • “For The Love of Zero” helps readers to understand the importance of language and it’s impact on the unconscious.
  • “Real Risk” has as its thesis, that to be able to discern risk, one must better understand it rather than try to eliminate or avoid it.
  • “Following leading in risk” focusses on leading risk, with a particular emphasis on understanding ‘followers’.
  • “Tackling risk” focuses on the interrelationship of risk with learning. There is no learning without risk, and no real living without learning.
  • “Risky conversations” is a transcription of 20 conversations on topics in risk and safety.
  • “Fallibility and Risk, Living With Uncertainty” his latest book can be freely downloaded at https://www.humandymensions.com/product/fallibility-risk-living-uncertainty/

The lecture

The social psychology of risk has a focus on how social arrangements affect decision-making.

The key drivers and determinants of behaviour are driven by conscious and unconscious values, beliefs and attitudes held individually and socially in organisations. Individuals and organisations ‘make sense’ of risk according to Collective Mindfulness and Social-Psychological Sensemaking. Dr Long understands culture as ‘the collective unconscious’.

You will learn that too much confidence is placed in paperwork, systems, the fallibility of ‘common sense’ and rational-only approaches to understanding and managing risk. The lecture generates a new awareness, which accepts the importance of observing self and others in a supportive and non-punishing way.

We hope you will leave the session with a new found enthusiasm to engage with others in open questions, smart observations, effective listening and supportive conversations and a better understanding of how culture influences behaviours.
